Leadership
The Section Council of Chiefs is led by the Section Chief. His two colleagues are the Vice Chief and Secretary. These officers are elected to their terms during the business meeting at the conclave or during a special election at a Council of Chiefs meeting. Bureaucratic overseers to the section include the Section Adviser, Staff Adviser, and Associate Adviser
Section officers represent the Order of the Arrow at the local level. The Section Chief is the promoter of all of the Order of the Arrow’s national annual programs. This means that all three officers go out and promote the Order of the Arrow to members of the section. The officers are also available to attend lodge events and meetings to help promote the section conclave and the Order of the Arrow. New members might be especially inspired by meeting section officers. The officers thoroughly enjoy assisting the lodges at their local events. These are some of the general duties of the section officers. Some of the more specific duties of each officer are delineated below.
Section Secretary: This person is responsible for maintaining and distributing section materials to the members of the COC under the direction of the Section Chief. Additionally, minutes for each COC meeting are typed and distributed to the COC within fifteen days of the most recent meeting, as well as distributing the information advertising the next COC in a timely fashion. The secretary also is responsible for all other duties as assigned by the Chief.
Section Vice Chief: This individual, in addition to all other duties as assigned by the Chief, is responsible for the Section Assistance Team – recruiting, training, and reporting on what transpires at the lodge visitations. Communicating with the lodges being visited during the year, following-up on discussions and relaying suggestions to the Council of Chiefs all are duties of the Vice Chief.
Section Chief: This Arrowman is the Order of the Arrow’s youth representative within the section’s jurisdiction, with the assistance and support of the capable adult advisers. His task is to manage the planning and production of the section Conclave, as well as provide support materials to the COC’s lodges and committees. The Chief always keeps his eyes on the goals of the section, but not at the expense of the everyday operations of the section. Additionally, the Chief works closely with the service lodge to ensure that everything on the section’s end is covered for the conclave. The Chief is effectively a member of each of the section committees, and should be informed as such.
